Diplôme national du Brevet

Taken by each student at the end of 3ème, the Diplôme National du Brevet assesses competences and knowledge acquired during collège.

It is not a condition to access the next grade level.

Organization of tests

The Diplôme National du Brevet is taken in three days: 2 days of written tests + 1 oral exam.

1st day: French (3h) and History-Geography/Moral Education (2h)

A common theme for the day links every discipline. Tests contain:

  • Various questions for every subject

  • Writing and argumentation work

  • A dictation

2nd day: Mathematics (2h) and Experimental Sciences and Technology (1h)

A common theme for the day links every discipline. Tests contain:

  • Various questions for every subject

  • An exercise of IT programmation, linked with the programmes of Mathematics and Technology.

An oral test of 15 minutes (10 minutes of presentation followed by a 5 minutes interview)

The student has to present an interdisciplinary project he conducted within the frame of EPIs or diverse “Parcours” (EAC, avenir, citoyen, santé); it is up to the student to choose the project he wants to present.

From 2017, as a consequence of the reform of collège, modalities vary regarding to previous years.

Physique-chimie, SVT and Technologie are now tested during a final exam, and those exams, divided in three days, include 8 hours instead of 7.

Terms of grant

Continuous monitoring is worth an amount of 400 points.

Each of the 8 learning fields included in the socle commun (common base) gives the student a certain amount of points, determined during 3rd trimester class council in 3ème:

  • Insufficient mastery (10 points)

  • Tenuous mastery (20 points)

  • Satisfying mastery (35 points)

  • Very good mastery (50 points)

Final control is worth 300 points:

  • Français, Histoire-Géographie and Enseignement Moral et Civique are scored on a total of 100 points

  • Mathématiques, Physique-Chimie, SVT and Technologie are scored on a total of 100 points

  • Oral examination is scored on a total of 100 points

Students pass if they accumulate 350 points over 700. They obtain the mention:

  • “assez bien” if they accumulate more than 420 points

  • “bien” if they accumulate more than 490 points

  • “très bien” if they accumulate more than 560 points
