From preschool to Baccalauréat
From preschool to Baccalauréat: syllabuses issued by the French Ministry of Education.
Every school in the AEFE network teaches the language of its host country as well as French, besides its usual modern foreign languages teachings.
Starting from 2016/2017, 3 years cycles are organized according the following.
Cycle 1: preschool
First cycle of French scolarship, it does not however represent a mandatory step since in France mandatory scolarship starts at 6 years-old with the second cycle.

Cycle 2: basic learnings
This cycle corresponds to CP, CE1, CE2 classes .
In the 2nd cycle pupils start to study foreign or regional languages, mathematics, world discovery activities, artistic education (visual arts and musical education) and physical education.

Cycle 3: consolidation cycle
Besides its role of consolidation of acquired knowledge, this cycle (which corresponds to CM1, CM2 and 6ème classes) aims to ensure a better transition from primary to collège.
In the 3rd cycle pupils study more precisely literature, history and geography and experimental sciences. Information and communication technologies and tools for different educational activities.
In 6ème, 3 hours a week are reserved to pupils’ personal support.

Cycle 4: deepening cycle
This cycle corresponds to the end of collège (classes of 5ème, 4ème and 3ème).
Instead of starting LV2 (german or spanish) in 4ème, like they used to, children will now begin to study them in 5ème, 2h30 a week.
Personal support is reduced to 1 to 2 hours a week, which makes time for EPIs, 2 to 3 hours a week (see below).

Cycle 5: the Lycée
As well as preschool, Lycée is not a mandatory step in French scholarship (which ends after the class of 3ème). But it still is an essential step for an overwhelming majority of students.
